Fallen trees: why initial conditions matter

A publication examines decomposition as ecological succession.

Study published:

The log as an ecosystem

Inputs, losses and internal nutrient cycling were measured in experimental conifer logs during early decomposition. [1]

The starting point shapes the process

Wood chemistry, temperature and moisture influenced colonization. Different wood-feeding insect groups carried different decomposer communities. [1]

A connection with our Center

At our Center, we want accounts that follow a material over time. We plan educational records of the initial condition, location and development of woody materials, allowing discussion through specific examples.

Presentation context

The chapter examines the same long-term log research also presented in 1988. The educational connection is our own.
