Paxos 2025: the first regenerative agriculture seminar, the beginning of a collective effort

On 3 May 2025, Paxos hosted its first seminar, ‘Introduction to Regenerative Agriculture’, initiated by Bio7nisa · Eco7nisa in cooperation with environmental organisations, agricultural advisers and organic certification bodies.
The meeting in the Municipal Council Chamber in Gaios marked the start of a collective effort to regenerate the soil and revitalise traditional olive growing.

A collective initiative
Bio7nisa · Eco7nisa organised the event with the participation of DIO, Southern Lights, CorfuAgro, the Corfu Environmental Protection Association, the Corfu Ecology Club and the EcoCorfu Environmental Initiative. The event was supported by Ionian University · CIRCUS and funded by the Ionian Environment Foundation.
The presentations
Six speakers explored different aspects of regenerative management: Dimitris Fanariotis introduced the concept and principles of regenerative agriculture; Dimitris Sotiropoulos of DIO presented organic regenerative agriculture and the standard O.R.A.; Evgenia Vitouladiti of CorfuAgro examined cropping systems; Eleni Martzoukou discussed the water and carbon cycles; Apostolos Kavvadias focused on organic olive growing and the transition to regenerative management; and Spyros Mamalos presented recycling and composting in schools. The programme also included a video about a world record for polyphenols in olive oil.

Why Paxos?
Traditional olive groves are an integral part of the island’s landscape and cultural heritage. The decline in agricultural activity and the growing dominance of tourism make the search for new, sustainable ways of producing particularly important.
The regenerative approach seeks to restore soil functions, biodiversity and nutrient and water cycles, while reducing reliance on external inputs. Proper composting of local organic materials and support for soil biology are important parts of this approach.
From information to dialogue
The seminar offered an opportunity for discussion and an exchange of ideas with the audience. DIO’s subsequent report noted the interest and quality of the dialogue about the transition to sustainable farming practices.

Continuing the work on Paxos
A further event took place on Paxos in April 2026, focusing on soil microbiology and the application of regenerative agriculture to olive growing. The meeting highlighted opportunities for pilot projects and the creation of a Paxos Regenerative Agriculture Research Group.
