Roots, mycorrhizae and protozoa: a connected community
Ingham and Massicotte examine communities around conifer roots.
Study published:
What they observed
Protozoan communities varied with the host tree and ectomycorrhizal fungus. Six communities were identified, differing in composition and abundance. [1]
The authors’ interpretation
The authors propose connections with changes in root exudates and bacteria. They also discuss possible feedback from protozoa through bacterial grazing and nitrogen mineralization. [1]
An educational question for our Center
We want microscopy to connect with the plant from which a sample comes. In our educational archive, we plan to record plant species, root location and preparation, so that images have useful context. This connection is our own synthesis.
Interpretive context
The presentation draws on the published abstract concerning conifers and ectomycorrhizae. Proposed mechanisms retain their status as the authors’ interpretation.
