The soil food web after clearcutting
Ingham and Thies follow biological responses in forest soil.
Study published:
The comparison
Microorganisms and soil fauna were monitored after clearcutting a mature Douglas-fir forest and compared with an uncut stand. [1]
Changes after harvesting
Total fungal biomass fell approximately tenfold, while bacterial biomass and nematodes also declined. The paper additionally examined chloropicrin application to stumps. [1]
A connection with our Center
At our Center, we want educational discussions of management changes to include site history. We propose records before and after interventions, describing clearly what changed and when.
Presentation context
The reductions above concern the comparison after clearcutting. The educational connection is our own.
