Olive grove microbial life changes with season and management

Source publication: 2026-10-15 · Our publication: 19 October 2026

A southern Spanish olive orchard case study examines seasonal and spatial differences in soil microbial functioning.

Natural mixed cover generally showed greater microbial biomass and enzyme activity than tilled soil and herbicide-treated tree lines, especially in spring and autumn. Winter biomass and enzyme activity did not follow the same pattern.

Evidence and local use

This is a preprint, not peer-reviewed research. One orchard cannot represent all Mediterranean conditions. For future Paxos monitoring, we propose comparing equivalent seasons and recording slope position separately; this is an editorial proposal, not a local trial result.
