Soil Biology · Biologically Active Compost · Applied Regenerative Agriculture

Bringing life back to soil.

The Hellenic Center for Regenerative Agriculture is taking shape in Corfu and the Ionian Islands, bringing together soil biology, composting, education and practical work on farms.

FROM KNOWLEDGE TO FIELDWORK

Soil is a living ecosystem.

We observe what happens below the surface, apply practices that support soil life and monitor the results, following the principles taught by Dr. Elaine Ingham’s Soil Food Web School, where our team completed the Foundation Courses.

01 / UNDERSTAND

Know the soil

We examine soil structure, organic matter and communities of organisms that live there and work with plant roots.

02 / APPLY

Restore biology

We work with ground cover, organic materials, biologically active compost and liquid amendments suited to each soil type and crop.

03 / MICROSCOPIC MONITORING

We learn from fieldwork

We compare microscopic observations and organic matter measurements. We restore and maintain the soil food web.

OUR AREAS OF WORK

Five aspects of our work.

Soil biology

Microorganisms and other soil organisms keep the soil alive and functioning through their food-web relationships and interactions.

Biologically active compost

Mixing, inoculating with microorganisms, maintaining aerobic conditions and biologically assessing the final product.

Microscopy

Observing key groups of microorganisms in soil and compost samples.

Regenerative management

Soil cover, addition of organic matter and liquid compost extracts to protect the whole plant.

Applications on the farm

Progressive monitoring of microorganisms, enriching the soil with biologically active compost and exchanging knowledge with growers.

OUR WORK SO FAR

The work that brought us here.

The Center builds on activities already under way in the Ionian Islands.

CORFU 2024 · 2025

Composting demonstration

A practical project in Solari using spent coffee grounds and carbon-rich materials, with monitoring of the process.

PAXOS 2025 · 2026

Education and outreach

Introductory regenerative agriculture seminars with agronomists, environmental groups and local collaborators.

EDUCATION 2024 · ONGOING

Microscopic observation of soil and compost microbiology

Completion of the Soil Food Web School Foundation Courses, with further practical training planned.

PROJECT IN DEVELOPMENT · PAXOS

The olive grove as a living classroom.

We are planning a regenerative agriculture project in an olive grove on Paxos, starting with a baseline assessment, followed by gradual interventions and monitoring under real field conditions.

Our people

The Center’s team and collaborators

We connect education, field practice and environmental action. The Corfu Environmental Protection Association and the Corfu Ecology Club participate in and support our work through collaboration with their representatives.

COORDINATION · SOIL BIOLOGY

Dimitris Fanariotis

Dimitris completed the Soil Food Web School Foundation Courses with Distinction, with support from IEF. He coordinates composting, education and environmental projects in the Ionian Islands and is continuing his training in advanced practical programs.

AGRONOMIST · CERTIFIED AGRICULTURAL ADVISOR

Evgenia Vitouladiti

Evgenia is an agronomist and certified agricultural advisor with experience in supporting growers. She completed the Soil Food Web School Foundation Courses and contributes to the planning of regenerative agriculture projects. She has also completed training with additional certification from EIT Food.

CIVIL ENGINEER · TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Gerasimos (Makis) Mouzakitis

A graduate of the National Technical University of Athens, Gerasimos has experience in telematics and web applications. He has worked with plant cultivation and composting, and has provided technical support to the team from the outset.

Organic olive grower · Composting team

Apostolos Kavvadias

He cultivates the family’s organic olive grove at Dr. Kavvadia farm in Corfu and participates in the composting team at Solari. We are planning regenerative agriculture applications in his grove, with soil monitoring.

Composting for regenerative agriculture

In June 2025, we began a pilot composting project for regenerative agriculture at the Neoi Orizontes social cooperative’s greenhouse site in Solari, Corfu.

The first piles used around 3 tonnes of spent coffee grounds, combined with similar quantities of wood chips, leaves and straw. Organic residues that would otherwise have become waste became the raw materials for compost.

Our aim is living, biologically active compost that supports soil life. The mixture was inoculated with soil food web organisms, while the team worked on mixing and tending the piles.

The demonstration connects research with hands-on learning: we explore how to make use of organic residues and how compost can be applied in regenerative farming.
