Observing fungal activity in soil with FDA staining

Ingham and Klein connect microscopic observation with fungal respiration.

Study published:

From culture to soil

Penicillium citrinum and Rhizoctonia solani were examined in sterilized and non-sterilized soil, with and without nutrient additions. [1]

The connection with respiration

Fluorescein diacetate (FDA) staining correlated with fungal CO₂ production. The authors suggest that this relationship could help assess fungal contributions to carbon transformations. [1]

An educational question for our Center

We want each microscopic image connected with the question being examined. In our educational archive, we plan to record the sample, observation method and preparation together. We can then revisit images with clear context and discuss the information each procedure provides.

Presentation context

This presentation draws on the experiment’s published abstract. The connection with our Center’s training is our own editorial synthesis.
