Life inside fallen logs: insects and decomposers

The early stages of wood decomposition in a long-term experiment.

Study published:

The first colonizers

The early years of conifer log decomposition were studied. Beetles excavated galleries and carried organisms forming part of the initial decomposer community. [1]

A food web within wood

The community included bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes and arthropods. Researchers proposed that moisture and temperature jointly shape its seasonal activity. [1]

A connection with our Center

We want our library to cover interactions among different organism groups. For educational visits, we plan wood observation sheets with photographs and descriptions of location.

Presentation context

Presentation of early findings for conifer logs. The educational proposal is our own synthesis.
