Soil life and spatial scale: the forest experiment’s early observations
Ingham and colleagues examine how sampling scale changes the picture.
Proceedings published:
The local picture
During the first year, marked reductions in soil organisms occurred at individual locations near stumps. [1]
The plot-level picture
Whole-plot averages showed no statistically significant treatment effect. Spatial scale is central to interpreting the observations. [1]
What to note beside a measurement
When reading a result, we can note whether it concerns one point, a composite sample or the whole plot. This small distinction helps us describe the observation more precisely.
The research continues
A preliminary report from the same experiment as Part 1 and the related 1996 paper. Monitoring was continuing.
