Riparian forests: organic matter and microbial life
Ingham and colleagues compare forested and pasture riparian zones.
Study published:
Beside the streams
Paired forest and pasture soils along three Oregon streams were examined through seasonal measurements of chemistry and microbial activity. [1]
What they found
Forest soils held more organic carbon and nitrogen, greater fungal biomass and higher respiration. The authors link these findings with greater capacity to retain carbon and nutrients. [1]
Our local connection
We want our educational library to include soils around streams in Corfu and the Ionian Islands. As an educational question, we propose recording vegetation and land use alongside each sample.
Presentation context
The summary draws on the original paper for the particular Oregon sites. The local educational connection is our own.
