Agroforestry: microbial life near tree rows

Microscopic measurements in an alder and sweet corn system.

Study published:

The system examined

Alder hedgerows were combined with sweet corn in the alleys. Trees were periodically coppiced and prunings incorporated into soil. [1]

Distance mattered

Active fungal and bacterial biomass were greatest in tree rows and decreased with distance. Relatively small pruning inputs alone had little effect in the middle of the alley. [1]

How we want to organise observations

For our Center’s educational work, we want sampling points marked on a simple field map. Each microscopic image can then be discussed alongside its precise location. This is our own educational proposal.

Presentation context

The summary concerns the particular alder and corn system described in the published abstract.
